What Makes a Great Brick Drop Prize?

One of the most enjoyable parts of running Brick Drop is deciding what we would actually be excited to put in front of the community.

There are always new releases appearing, older sets we would love to track down and plenty of ideas being thrown around, so choosing what makes it onto the site is not always as straightforward as it looks.

For us, it usually starts with one simple question:

Would we be excited to win it ourselves?

If the answer is yes, it is normally a pretty good place to start.

It Has to Have Something About It

The best prizes are usually the ones that make you stop scrolling for a second.

Sometimes that is because the set looks incredible on display. Sometimes it is because of the theme. Sometimes it is pure nostalgia.

And sometimes it is simply because it is a set that feels a little harder to get hold of.

We like prizes that have a bit of personality rather than just choosing something because it happens to be new.

Some Themes Always Catch Our Eye

There are definitely a few themes we naturally gravitate towards.

Star Wars, Disney and BrickHeadz are three that regularly get our attention, partly because there is so much variety within them.

They can give us everything from a small fun build right through to a huge display piece.

But we never want Brick Drop to become a site where you see the same type of prize every week.

Part of the fun is not quite knowing what is coming next.

Big, Small, New and Retired

We deliberately like to mix things up.

One week there might be a much larger collector set sitting on the site. The next could feature a smaller release that makes for a quick, affordable competition.

New releases are always exciting, but retired sets are just as appealing.

In fact, there is something particularly satisfying about finding a set that is becoming harder to get and being able to put it back in front of LEGO fans.

It keeps the site varied and hopefully means there is something for different types of collectors and builders.

A Perfect Example: PAC-MAN Arcade

A recent set that felt particularly “Brick Drop” to us was the PAC-MAN Arcade.

It ticked so many boxes.

It is a brilliant display piece, has loads of retro appeal and brings back a lot of nostalgia for anyone who grew up around arcade games.

And with the set heading towards retirement, it had that extra feeling of being something worth getting hold of while you still can.

Those are the sorts of prizes we love finding — sets that are not just impressive builds, but ones that actually mean something to people.

We Listen to What You Want Too

The Brick Drop community has a big part to play in what catches our attention.

We see what people comment on, what gets talked about and which themes keep coming up.

That does not mean every request can instantly become a competition, but it absolutely gives us ideas and helps point us towards the sorts of prizes people genuinely want to see.

That is one of the reasons we want the Activity Feed to keep growing.

And It Does Not Always Have to Be LEGO

LEGO will always be at the heart of Brick Drop, but we are brick fans more broadly too.

That means we are happy to occasionally try something a little different.

Brands such as Lumibricks give us the chance to feature builds with a different style, detailed interiors and integrated lighting, while still appealing to people who simply enjoy building with bricks.

We like having the freedom to experiment every now and then rather than making every competition look exactly the same.

If something looks interesting and we think the community will enjoy it, it is worth considering.
