The Sets We’d Probably Keep for Ourselves… 👀
Running Brick Drop means we get to buy some brilliant LEGO sets.
That is obviously one of the perks.
The downside?
Every now and then, a set turns up and we immediately think:
“Do we really have to give this one away?”
Most of the time, we behave ourselves and remember that the whole point is to send these sets out to winners.
Most of the time.
So, for this week’s blog, here are five sets that would be particularly dangerous to leave sitting in the Brick Drop prize cupboard for too long.
1. LEGO® Icons The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell
This is probably one of the easiest ones to explain.
Rivendell is an incredible set, and we love the wider Lord of the Rings range too.
The problem is that Lord of the Rings is exactly the sort of LEGO theme that can become expensive very quickly.
We have deliberately tried to avoid getting properly sucked into collecting it for that reason.
Because once you start, where do you stop?
Rivendell is one of those sets that makes that self-control very difficult.
It is huge, incredibly detailed and one of those builds that looks just as impressive on display as it does while you are building it.
Definitely one we would be very tempted to keep.
2. LEGO® Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters
This one is firmly in Holy Grail territory.
The Ghostbusters Firehouse is one of those sets we rarely see available at a sensible price, and when one does appear, it does not usually hang around for long.
It has been on the wish list for a long time.
For us, it has everything going for it: nostalgia, display value and the fact that it is now difficult to find.
Would we love one?
Absolutely.
Would it be painful putting one up as a Brick Drop prize?
Also absolutely.
One day, though.
One day.
3. LEGO® Ideas The X-Files: The Truth Is Out There
This one has already caused problems.
We recently bought The X-Files set for a Brick Drop competition and, after seeing it properly, ended up ordering another one for ourselves.
So technically this one has already defeated the system.
The X-Files is pure nostalgia.
If you grew up watching Mulder and Scully investigating everything from UFOs to things they definitely should not have gone anywhere near, it is hard not to love seeing the show turned into a LEGO set.
It is also exactly the sort of release we enjoy featuring on Brick Drop — something a little different that immediately gets people talking.
The competition copy arrived.
Then somehow another one found its way into our own collection.
Funny how that happens.
4. LEGO® Creator Expert Assembly Square
We have mentioned before that Modular Buildings are probably our biggest LEGO weakness.
We already have a few of the newer Modulars, but there are still gaps when it comes to some of the older releases.
Assembly Square is one of them.
The Modular range is dangerous because one set never really feels like enough.
You buy one.
Then it needs a neighbour.
Then suddenly you are planning an entire LEGO street and wondering where another display cabinet is going to fit.
Assembly Square would fill one of those older gaps very nicely.
Which is exactly why it would be risky to leave one anywhere near us for too long.
5. LEGO® DC Batman Batcave – Shadow Box
Batman is another theme we have always loved.
The Batcave Shadow Box is one of those sets we missed when it was readily available and have regretted ever since.
It is a brilliant display piece and completely different from a lot of traditional LEGO sets.
It is also one of those sets where every time we see one, the same thought comes back:
We really should get one of these.
We will eventually.
That much is probably inevitable.
The Problem With Running a LEGO Competition Site
This is probably the biggest occupational hazard of Brick Drop.
We choose prizes based on sets that we think LEGO fans will genuinely want to win.
Unfortunately, that usually means choosing sets that we genuinely want as well.
There have already been plenty of occasions where something arrives and the temptation to move it from the prize cupboard to our own collection is very real.
Luckily for our winners, we are generally quite disciplined.
Generally.
